Freetown, Dec. 14, 2015 (MOHS) – Information and Communication Officers of ECOWAS countries have pledged to promote the activities and visibility of the West Africa Health Organization (WAHO) at the conclusion of a two day meeting held at Palm Beach Hotel, Quagadougou, Burkina Faso.

The meeting which attracted Communication Officers from Health Ministries and other private media institutions and online journalists aimed at building the knowledge of participants on the unique role of WAHO across ECOWAS, boost their capacity of awareness of WAHO and rebrand the institution. The specifics also aimed at creating a wave of sympathy on the part of participants, pave the way for future collaboration between WAHO related information in their respective countries, and to challenge participants to contribute to rebrand the institution among its various targets.

From Sierra Leone, the Public Relations Officer, Ministry of Health and Sanitation, Jonathan Abass Kamara and the ICT Director, Sidi Yayah Tunis were among the Anglo phone and Franco phone participants that came out with six recommendations that would make WAHO a more viable institution.
Key among the recommendations were the establishment of a network of both Anglo phone and Franco phone countries, strengthening the communication and information unit of WAHO with qualified personnel, an annual meeting between WAHO and the network, encourage online health reporters among other member countries to link their site to WAHO website as well as using the means of social media such as facebook, twitter, whatsapp, viber to promote WAHO activities, and to provide advocacy through continuous publication of WAHO interventions and needs in member states.

Other highlights include presentations of group work, the Draft and Final Report by the Anglo phone and Franco phone participants. Sierra Leone led the Anglo phone group with Jonathan Abass Kamara as Rapporteur and Sidi Yayah Tunis as Chair.
